MEC LEHARI VOWS FOR ZERO TOLERANCE DURING LOCKDOWN TRAVELING WINDOW PERIOD

North West Community Safety and Transport Management MEC, Sello Lehari pleads with motorists and all road users who will be travelling during the lockdown window period to adhere to regulations and abide to road rules.

The travelling winsome began on Friday, 01 May 2020 till Thursday, 07 May 2020. The MEC said traffic is expected to increase during this window period as workers in essential industries are returning to work.

As the country entered Lockdown Level 4 on Friday 01 May 2020 travelling is once off allowed.

MEC is encouraging everyone who travels to adhere to strict regulations and restrictions. “We are humbly and politely reminding those shall be travelling to ensure they adhere. Law enforcement officers will be on our roads to ensure strict adherence," said Lehari.

Operating hours for all road-based public transport modes is from 05H:00 to 19H:00, with a grace period of an hour in the afternoon to complete their trips and drop off passengers. It is important for operators to note that they are not allowed on the roads between 20:00 and 05:00. Once more operators are advised to adhere strictly to these hours.

Long distance bus and taxi operators are allowed to undertake long distance travel between May 01 and May 07, 2020. Again those who shall be travelling are reminded to adhere to road rules and Lockdown Level 4 regulations.

“We are again appealing to public transport operators in the Province to fully comply with the 70 percent passenger capacity. They must remember that all passengers and the driver must be sanitised, have masks on and the vehicles must be disinfected before and after trips.

“The traveling window period calls for intensive measures and commitment of every citizen to comply with regulations. This is an actual trial period to test how disciplined we are as citizens," he said.

MEC Lehari wishes to see accident free travel period. “We don’t expect people to travel with excitement and end up in unnecessary accidents and fatalities on our roads. Let us all be responsible and be safe on the roads. Let us all be safe from COVID-19,” pleaded MEC.
